Over 35 representatives of projects that will be using HPC Wales’ world-class supercomputing facilities, attended two awareness events in December 2011 to gain a deeper understanding of how high performance computing will support and build their success.
The Universities of Bangor and Glamorgan played host to the events where attendees met with HPC Wales Training and Outreach Mentors, explored the applications of high performance computing and learned how the HPC Wales infrastructure works. There was also the opportunity to hear the experiences of existing users.
Addressing attendees at December’s awareness events were Dr David Willock, Dr Tatiana Tatarinova and Dr Anna Croft who are already using HPC Wales’ facilities to aid their groundbreaking research projects in areas as diverse as metal catalysis, bacterial toxicity and eco-friendly chemistry.
One attendee at the Bangor event, whose project is set to benefit from HPC Wales’ technology, was Sarah Wardlaw. Sarah is leading a new digital curation project which will open up environmental science to the public through innovative digital interpretations. She said:
“HPC Wales will help lay new ground in allowing exciting concepts such as ours to find their expression in gaming technologies. This will, in turn, make it possible for people to see the world from a new perspective, because the technology removes obstacles that obscure knowledge and observation."
